Controversia por personas sin hogar en Barajas
Sources from AENA have denied that they will proceed to evacuate the Barajas Airport of homeless individuals who spend the night in these facilities and have asked the City Council and the Community of Madrid to find a «dignified solution» for them.
Aena, in an informational note distributed this Thursday, urges these two administrations, as competent authorities in social services matters in Madrid, to articulate a dignified solution for the homeless individuals residing in the facilities of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport.

In addition, sources from AENA consulted by EFE have denied that an evacuation will take place, as previously announced.
On the other hand, the delegate of Social Policies, Family, and Equality of the City Council of Madrid, José Fernández has called for government responsibility and has pointed out that many of the individuals who spend the night in Barajas are asylum seekers. The delegate councilor asked, «What does the Spanish government intend?» and emphasized the need for a responsible response from all the public administrations involved: the City Council of Madrid and also the Spanish government through the ministries of Interior, Social Affairs, Transport, and the ministry responsible for all migration-related issues.

According to the City Council, only 71 of those individuals who spend the night in the airport facilities fall under the category of «homeless» and therefore, the council believes it has jurisdiction over them.
According to the union Alternativa Sindical Aena/Enaire (Asae), approximately 500 people sleep at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport every night.
The airport company asserts that it has repeatedly expressed concerns to the City Council’s social services about the increasing number of homeless individuals residing in the airport facilities, creating a delicate situation, and has lamented that the lack of response has exacerbated the situation over time.
