Recreación del nuevo Teleférico de Madrid

The Municipal Transport Company (EMT Madrid) has opened a public tender for the complete renovation of the Cable Car with a base budget of 36.8 million euros, as reported by the City Council of Madrid in a press release.

EMT will award the drafting of the approved execution project, as well as the execution of the works to completely renovate the service, including the system and its elements, as well as the terminals at Pintor Rosales and Casa de Campo.

The contract has an estimated value of 31.9 million euros and the base bidding budget reaches 36.8 million. The first phase, the drafting of the execution project, has a budget of 690,703 euros and the second, the execution of the work, would reach 29.7 million, of which almost half would be allocated to the electromechanical installation.

26-MONTH DEADLINE

The project has a 26-month contract execution period from its formalization: fourteen months for the project and execution of the works and another two months, after the completion of the works, which include the start-up, monitoring, and the manufacturer’s first annual review.

As explained by the delegate for Urban Planning, Environment, and Mobility, Borja Carabante, the forecast is to start the works at the end of 2025 and finish by the end of 2026, «so that by the first quarter of 2027, it can be ready for use and enjoyment by all visitors.»

The complete renovation of the Cable Car is the solution that the City Council has found for the state in which the installation is due to the temporal wear and tear since its opening in 1969, which led to the service being suspended and its closure in 2022 after an unfavorable cable inspection.

The Madrid Cable Car reopens its doors

The stations will be renovated, all cabins will be replaced, and a new technological system will be installed to turn it into a tourist attraction.

The renovation and technology change will provide it with a completely automatic operation and safety, guaranteeing universal accessibility and transforming it into a mode of transport that is environmentally friendly with clean energy as a power source and low noise emissions.

IN THE SKY OF MADRID SINCE 1969

The Madrid Cable Car was inaugurated in June 1969 by the then Mayor, Carlos Arias Navarro. With the technical guidelines of the Swiss company Von Roll and under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Works, construction began in mid-1968 and was completed within a year, with an initial investment of 100 million pesetas.

The Cable Car was designed with a length of 2,500 meters and two stations, the motor terminal on Pintor Rosales Avenue and the tension terminal on Cerro Garabitas, located in Casa de Campo.

The journey, lasting eleven minutes, travels 40 meters above the ground, providing one of the best views of Madrid.
