Estreno de ‘El barbero de Picasso’ en el Teatro Español, una comedia sobre la patria perdida
The Small Hall of the Teatro Español – Margarita Xirgu hosts ‘El barbero de Picasso’ between this Thursday and July 20, a comedy written by Borja Ortiz de Gondra and directed by Chiqui Carabante that explores the deep friendship between Pablo Picasso and his barber, Eugenio Arias, who, exiled in the French town of Vallauris after the civil war, reminisce about their lost homeland.
Starring Antonio Molero and Pepe Viyuela, with Mar Calvo and José Ramón Iglesias in the cast, the play delves into the well-known relationship between the Malaga painter and his barber to present «a sharp and emotional comedy that invites reflection, through humor, on identity, memory, and the sense of belonging» through a conversation about «bulls, politics, and art» of «two exiled Spaniards,» as reported by Teatro Español.

With a barbershop as a backdrop, Ortiz de Gondra has crafted «a microcosm of passions, customs, and disagreements that evokes a Spain that no longer exists, except in the memories and conversations of those who miss it.»
Additionally, Chiqui Carabante explained that «this barbershop is a world full of passions and contradictions that only exists between those scissors and brushes,» and noted that «crossing its doors, on the outside, France, the land of freedom; but a country that will never be that of this barber and this painter,» because «they are no longer French or Spanish,» but «citizens of that invented homeland that any exile constructs.»

Completing the artistic team of ‘El barbero de Picasso’ are Walter Arias in charge of set design, Pablo Peña leading the sound space, and Salvador Carabante overseeing the costumes.
This show is part of the JOBO program, Young Cultural Bonus, for young people aged between 16 and 26.
The accessible performance will take place on June 20 and will include audio description, loop system, amplified sound, and surtitle for the deaf. For optimal visibility, Teatro Español recommends not purchasing tickets in the front rows if you plan to use the surtitles.
