La Comunidad de Madrid contará con un sistema inteligente de drenaje de agua para evitar inundaciones.
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the President of the Community of Madrid, has announced the launch of an intelligent and pioneering system in Spain for urban water drainage management in the region to provide greater assurance in flood prevention.
Ayuso revealed at an event in Las Rozas that the DREINCAM project, led by Canal de Isabel II, focuses on protecting the water masses of the rivers and has an investment of 25.8 million euros for its implementation and operation.
The regional government explained that DREINCAM requires the integration of multiple actions, some of which are already operational and others that Canal is currently developing, to facilitate the prediction of operations. This innovative technology will enhance the performance of drainage and sewerage infrastructure in Madrid municipalities.
More than 370 flood-prone areas in the Community of Madrid
Data in DREINCAM is centralized to provide a more comprehensive image of the situation from three different but complementary modules. The first is based on meteorological forecasts, the second on the details of 15,000 kilometers of drainage pipes in the region, and the last one with signals from various sensors that will be installed in infrastructures like collectors, relief valves, and storm tanks. These specific measurement devices can instantly evaluate both the flow rate and water pollution levels.
With the contribution of this information and through modeling and characterization tasks, DREINCAM will design a digital twin of the regional drainage system. It will serve as a support for decision-making, thanks to its predictive models and real-time solutions, as well as alerts for anomalous situations.
The Community of Madrid will provide 10 million euros in aid to municipalities affected by heavy rains
This solution was one of the selected projects in the second call of the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) for water cycle digitization. Specifically, 9.9 million euros out of the nearly 26 for its deployment come from the European Next Generation funds.
The regional president announced this new project at the same event where she revealed that her government will allocate 10 million euros in aid to municipalities with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants affected by the storms of this March.
