Regresan las ratas al Barrio de los Puertos de Legazpi.

Plaga de ratas en el barrio de los Puertos de Legazpi

Residents of the Barrio de los Puertos, in Legazpi, are once again facing the same problem as two years ago: a rat infestation is taking over the streets of the neighborhood and becoming a public health issue.

As we mentioned, this is not the first time this has happened. Back in 2023, dozens of rodents roamed freely through the streets of the neighborhood, after the City Council carried out sidewalk expansion works on Puerto de Béjar Street.

As a result of the works, the water pipes were exposed for about three months, which the rodents undoubtedly took advantage of to come out and settle in residential buildings.

For weeks now, people using the park on Puerto de Béjar Street have been seeing these types of rodents, sometimes alive, sometimes dead on a daily basis. Walking the dog or enjoying the playground inside has become a risky activity that neighbors try to avoid.

According to the Nuevo Legazpi Neighborhood Association, rats are not only wandering around Puerto de Béjar: they can also be seen on the sidewalks and streets of Puerto de Miravete and Puerto de la Cruz Verde. Therefore, they believe it’s only a matter of time before they spread to residential buildings, as it happened in 2023.

The Nuevo Legazpi and Nudo Sur neighborhood associations, who have been receiving photographs and data about the problem from their neighbors and members for days, are calling for an urgent intervention from the City Council to control the infestation and prevent it from spreading to the interior of residential buildings.
